What is
Sesame seeds?

Sudan’s largest exported agricultural product!

Sesame is a flowering plant in the genus Sesamum, also called benne. Numerous wild relatives occur in Africa and a smaller number in India. It has one of the highest oil contents of any seed. With a rich, nutty flavor, it is a common ingredient in cuisines across the world.

It is widely naturalized in tropical regions around the world and is cultivated for its edible seeds, which grow in pods or “buns“. It’s one of the oldest oilseed crops known, domesticated well over 3000 years ago.

  1. White sesame seeds (Gedarif Region Production): These are the seeds of which the external shells color varies from white to yellowish-white, provided that the colored seeds may not exceed 5%.
  2. Red (Brown) sesame seeds: These are whitish sesame seeds that contain a maximum of 25% of colored seeds.
  3. Mix (Commercial) sesame seeds: These are the seeds of which the external shell color varies from golden to brownish, and may contain 26% or more of colored seeds.

Gedarif is known for the quality of its sesame seeds. The state has been referred to as the country’s breadbasket, producing 62,000 tonnes of sesame seeds in the 2016 -2017 market year alone.

In 2013, the world production of sesame seeds was 4.2 million, led by India and mainland China. One of the largest producers of the crop is Sudan, with a record of over 0.7 million tons in the year 2013.

Sesame Uses

About 75% of Mexico's sesame crop is purchased by McDonald's for use in their sesame seed buns worldwide.

Sometimes added to breads

Sesame seeds are sometimes added to bread, including bagels and the tops of hamburger buns.

Producing sesame oil

Used as a cooking oil in different parts of the world, has a distinctive pleasant aroma and taste, and is used as a table condiment in some regions.

Made into a paste called tahini

Sesame seeds are made into a paste called tahini (used in various ways, including hummus bi tahini)
and the Middle Eastern confection halvah.

EXPORTING PROCESS

Exporting process

1. We pack our sesame in 50 kg polypropylene (PP) bags.
2. We load the 20 feet containers with up to 19 metric tons of the sesame seeds.
3. The minimum order quantity (20ft FCL) takes a period of 10 to 15 days to be on board of the vessel, this period varies depending on the quantity ordered.
4. Lead time to reach the clients desired port depends on the shipping lines used and the destination to that port, usually varies between 2 to 8 weeks for the farthest destination.
5. The H.S code for the sesame seeds is 12074090 (*)
6. Payment terms and documents provided along with the shipment are mentioned at the products main page **(please check)
7. Sudanese sesame is falling among the products which the US sanctions against Sudan has not exempted, therefore cannot be exported directly from PORTSUDAN to the US market unless obtaining a special OFAC license.
